27th Annual National Night Out – Tuesday, October 5, 2010, 6 to 9 p.m.
Attention Westcreek! Calling all neighbors…turn on your porch lights, lock your doors and spend the evening outside with your neighbors, police officers, firefighters and EMS paramedics. Consider hosting an event here in Westcreek, such as a cookout, block party or neighborhood walk. Events will occur simultaneously throughout the city and the entire nation! Let’s continue to strengthen our community, show our support for first responders, meet our neighbors, and send a message to criminals that we are unified in fighting crime.
Are you interested in hosting/co-hosting a block party? If so, go to the City’s web site for an application and turn it in as soon as possible
via fax (512) 974-6222 or to the following address:

If you’d like a first responder to attend your event (police, firefighters, EMS), please get your application in by September 5, 2010
Looking to team up with another resident and co-host an event? Contact me (Jennifer) directly at jleidun@yahoo.com and if anyone else has contacted me as well, I will try to help connect you.

School Crossing Guards Needed for Area Schools
Posted by elainepozos in News & Announcements, Patton Elementary on July 19th, 2010
We currently have part-time paid positions available for the next school year as noted below:
School Crossing Guards Needed for Baldwin, Clayton, Mills, Patton, Kocurek, and Casey Elementary Schools
The City of Austin is looking for applicants to fill crossing guard positions. We require people who are physically and mentally suited to work with children but also maintain a good relationship with the parents and motorists. These positions require that a person must be able to stand for at least 1 hour and be able to repeatedly cross the street with pedestrians during that time without becoming too fatigued. These persons must be dependable and will be expected to maintain a good attendance record. The applicants must be at least 16 years of age and there is no upper age limit as long as the applicants are physically and mentally able to keep our children safe. This is not a hard job but very important for the safety of our children crossing at these locations. These are City of Austin paid positions. The hourly rate is currently $8.50. The hours are 7:00 A.M. – 8:00 A.M. and 2:30 P.M. – 3:30 P.M. Monday through Friday and follow the same holiday schedule that AISD does. A Criminal Background Check will be conducted. No experience is required. Training will be provided.
Anyone interested should contact:

Community Dialogue about Austin ISD School Facilities

If you have ever wondered why there is not a high school to relieve the overcrowding at both Austin High School and Bowie High School, here’s your chance to provide public input to AISD.
In the last AISD Bond package, money was approved to purchase land for a future High School. I’ve heard that it could be in northern Hays County, it could be far southeast, or it could even be a magnet school. The AISD Board is now asking for input on what type of secondary education facility the “public” desires. Now is your chance to tell them! If you don’t participate, the School Board will do what they want, because they sense you just don’t care. Please mark your calendar. Travis High is just west of IH-35 on Oltorf.
Your insights and opinions will help shape the future of public education
in Austin. Please attend, listen, and speak up. Bring your neighbors and
friends.
Discuss issues that directly impact our public school facilities with educators, parents, students, civic and business leaders, and other engaged community members. The Power of Your Voice Will Help Guide the Emerging Facility Master Plan for Austin Schools.
Thursday, May 20, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Travis High School, Cafeteria
1211 E. Oltorf St.
Refreshments and child care provided.

Volunteer Needed for the Neighborhood Habitat Challenge
Posted by elainepozos in Going Green, News & Announcements on May 10th, 2010
Do you love birds and toads and lizards? Do you find yourself wandering around for hours at The Natural Gardener? Do you like to get out and meet your neighbors? Then the Westcreek Neighborhood Association (WNA) needs you! We are looking for a volunteer to lead our efforts in the City of Austin’s Neighborhood Habitat Challenge.
The City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) are challenging neighborhoods in Austin to create wildlife habitats at homes, businesses, and community property. “Wildlife Austin” is an initiative to educate and support Austinites in the creation of wildlife habitats to benefit its people, wildlife, and biodiversity. Creating habitat is as simple as…
- Planting native plants that provide nectar, pollen, seeds, and berries year round
- Including a reliable water source to attract a variety of critters
- Providing places for cover and rearing young such as planting evergreen shrubs, leaving rock piles or putting up a birdhouse.
The top three neighborhoods that complete all requirements and certify the most new habitats between April 12th and November 15th 2010 will be recognized by the City of Austin and eligible for prizes. Previous year’s prizes included a neighborhood tree planting in the local park, a neighborhood picnic, Designing for Wildlife Workshop, individual tree give-aways, and a canoe trip on Lady Bird Lake for challenge participants.

If you are interested in spearheading this project for Westcreek, please email Trudy Hasan at trudy.hasan@sbcglobal.net.

Are You A WNA Member?
Posted by elainepozos in News & Announcements on May 5th, 2010
Dear Westcreek Neighbors,
You’ve heard the pitch from public radio and KLRU-TV. Now here it is from the Westcreek Neighborhood Association:
“We need your support to keep our association working effectively for you and your neighborhood.”
We know that those of you who don’t join will get it for free, but we hope more of you will step up and do your part to support your neighborhood.
What is it you get for free, you ask?
Here’s what the WNA and our Executive Committee is doing for you:
• Giving us a voice at City Council on zoning and other issues that affect your property value and living experience in our neighborhood
• Promoting Walking Trails and other beautification efforts in Westcreek.
• A newsletter with neighborhood notes and resources you won’t find in the newspaper.
• Promoting Neighborhood social events like the annual picnic, the neighborhood garage sale and National Night Out.
• Developing an informative website just for the Westcreek Neighborhood.
• Maintaining the Yahoo Group community forum that is handy if your dog gets lost, has puppies, you need to sell your car, or any of the dozen other community news items that need to be communicated.
• Beautification of the public right of way at the entrance to Westcreek.
And much more!
Like NPR, the WNA won’t stop doing these things if you don’t pay up. But, hey, it’s less than $3 a month! We can do all this on a very skimpy budget because of the time your neighbors put in as board members and volunteers. All we ask is that you join us and pay $25 a year in dues. You might not be aware that currently less than 10% of the neighborhood is a dues paid member.
~ PLEASE DO YOUR PART ~
Click here: http://www.westcreekna.org/the-association/become-a-member/ to pay your 2010 dues online. It only takes about 3 minutes to do it through our secure payment gateway.
Please join today and Thank You for your support!
