How to deal with a neighbor’s loose and/or vicious or aggressive dog
Posted by Jennifer Voss in Pets, Safety, Uncategorized on February 14th, 2014
The City of Austin does have an ordinance about unrestrained dogs.
§ 3-4-1 UNRESTRAINED DOG PROHIBITED.
(A) Except as provided in Section 3-4-4 (Public Areas Where Restraint of a Dog is Not Required), an owner or handler of a dog shall keep the dog under restraint.
(B) A person holding a dog on a leash or lead shall keep the dog under control at all times.
(see http://www.austintexas.gov/department/animal-protection-ordinances)
- If the dog is loose, call 311
- If the dog is loose and is acting aggressive, call 311
- If the dog is loose and close to a school/area with children, call 311 (and definitely mention that)
- If the dog is loose and currently attacking another dog or person, call 911
Animal Control Services respond (come out) to loose dog calls Mon-Fri, 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sat/Sun 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. and from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on city holidays. If issues outside of these hours, call 311.
If you have had issues with an owner who habitually lets their dog out (aggressive dog or not), call 311 and report the issue and the owner’s address. Obviously, we want to talk to the neighbor first to solve but if no luck, then call 311. The Animal Control Office will then investigate the situation and discuss with the neighbor. If the dog is out, owner can be cited and dog impounded where owner has to pay to get dog back.

Dog Boarding Recommendations

We usually bring our dog to The Happy Mailman (http://www.happymailmandogs.com/). They are really great there and definitely love what they are doing. -Resident
We’ve also been taking our dog to Happy Mailman for almost five years The people there really love dogs. There is someone on site overnight (not in the dog building, but with a walkie talkie and in the next building), which makes all the difference for us as owners of an anxiety-prone dog. -Resident
Howl and Woof. They’ve been around for a couple of years but have many years of extensive dog training/boarding/etc. Check out Yelp for the reviews. http://www.howlnwoof.com/ -Resident

I use a guy named Kevin Ryan for my poodle mix. He lives in S Austin and grooms at his appartment. He is very much a home business, but I like that about him. He is also reasonably priced and fairly easy to schedule. His company is called Clean Critters of Austin and his number is (512)-731-7445. His e-mail is [email protected]
I also use Midtown Grooming!!!! We have a cat, though. My cat has been going there to get groomed for over 5 years now, and loves it.

The Barking Bubble at Slaughter & Mancahaca. 280-6300. They don’t do teeth brushing, but they do everything else.
